Google 2.0 is here - Introducing free Google 411 for Voice

Wow, things really do happen fast and a great example of “internet time”.

Here’s the result of my prediction on March 19th.

Watch out Voice based directory services have just been disrupted and expect Google to be leader in this space.

self-competition

It'll be interesting to see if this service will override/lose out to some of Google's current offerings.

I've been using their SMS services for over a year, generally as a 411 replacement (send a text message containing a name/zip code to 46645 and get back address/phone number of any hits.)

Personally, I'd rather do that than dial a number and wade through voice activated menus or possibly deal with a person. It's quicker/simpler for me use the text message (not to mention that my "anti-people" personality creates in me a dislike for the "personality" a voice activated menu generally tries to emulate.)

Basically, I prefer and even *like* the cold functionality of being terse in an SMS.
I don't want to talk to a machine pretending to be a warm caring person any more than I want to talk to a *real* warm caring person for something like 411 info.

No, Market Expansion

gxnorm's picture

Google’s entrance into voice directory services (411)  does not reflect a self-competitive (cannibalistic) move against existing revenue streams.

But rather a market expansion opportunity.

Google 1.0 created an internet  platform where marketers’ bid against each other to drive search engine results to their offers.  Google Adwords is an automated engine that drives google revenue without any human intervention (please read my previous posts on the subject ).

Google’s 411 service could easily leverage the very basis of Google 1.0 and brings the platform into a more widely used communication medium – Voice.

I’ve termed this Google 2.0 on the belief that Google has the opportunity to leverage an existing (profitable) investment into an adjacent market. Product Management 101 and pure brilliance.

If you connect the dots between the rumblings of Google mobile phone for the masses and Google 411,  you’ll start to see the possibilities as to how google will enter into a larger market accessible by many more users.
